India’s Data Centre Capacity Crosses 1.5 GW, Adds 260 MW in First Nine Months of 2025: Report
New Delhi: India’s data centre (DC) capacity has surpassed 1.5 gigawatts (GW) for the first time, with 260 megawatts (MW) added between January and September 2025, according to a report by CBRE South Asia released on Wednesday.
The real estate consultancy attributed the growth to “rapid digitalisation, favourable government policies, and rising corporate investments in Artificial Intelligence (AI).”
Mumbai continues to dominate the country’s DC landscape, accounting for 53% of total capacity — about 1,530 MW as of September. Its strategic location near global internet exchange points and submarine cable landing sites has made it a preferred destination for operators.
Following Mumbai are Chennai, Delhi-NCR, and Bengaluru, contributing 20%, 10%, and 7% respectively. Together, these four cities host nearly 90% of India’s total DC capacity.
“India’s data centre capacity has expanded dramatically in the past four to five years, reflecting the country’s accelerating digital transformation,” said Anshuman Magazine, Chairman & CEO, India, South-East Asia, Middle East & Africa, CBRE.
He added that rising internet penetration, cloud adoption, and the emergence of AI and Internet of Things (IoT) applications have created an unprecedented demand for robust data infrastructure. Supportive government measures and data localisation norms are further positioning India as a major global data hub, he noted.
The report also highlighted India’s cost competitiveness, citing lower construction and electricity expenses compared to regional markets such as Singapore, China, and Japan.
India’s skilled workforce adds to its advantage, with the country accounting for 16% of the global AI talent pool — over 600,000 professionals — a number expected to double by 2027.
Since 2019, India has attracted nearly $94 billion in DC investment commitments, led by Telangana, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. In the first nine months of 2025 alone, investment commitments worth approximately $30 billion were recorded in the sector.
