Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said that decades of injustice faced by the tribal population in Jammu and Kashmir came to an end in August 2019 with the abrogation of Article 370 by the Central Government.
The LG made these remarks while virtually inaugurating the National Tribal Festival at Gurez, a two-day celebration of the vibrant culture and traditions of the Dard-Shina tribal community.
Highlighting the government’s commitment to tribal welfare, Sinha said several transformative initiatives have significantly improved the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities. He paid homage to tribal icon and freedom fighter Bhagwan Birsa Munda, praising the community’s enduring contribution to India’s cultural diversity.
“I consider the Dard-Shina community one of India’s most treasured cultural legacies. Their traditions and rituals serve as an inspiration, and their deep-rooted harmony with nature teaches humanity the value of sustainable living,” he said.
Sinha noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government is working to preserve tribal heritage and restore their historic dignity.
He emphasized the Centre’s consistent efforts to empower tribal communities and cited Gurez’s connection to the power grid in 2023—for the first time since 1947—as a symbol of this progress.
On the occasion, the LG dedicated the Shina Gilgit 88.8 FM Radio Station to the Dard-Shina community, saying it will play a crucial role in preserving their values, knowledge, and oral traditions. He suggested launching a weekly programme to showcase the community’s rich history.
Sinha also highlighted Gurez’s transformation into one of India’s top offbeat travel destinations, known for its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture. He encouraged the new community radio station to reflect the region’s natural beauty and artistic heritage.
He concluded by commending the Indian Army, the Tribal Affairs Department, the district administration, and voluntary organisations for their efforts in promoting the Dard-Shina community’s priceless cultural heritage.
