iPhone 17 Pro Faces ‘Scratchgate’ Due to Aluminium Casing
The iPhone 17 Pro introduces new colors, redesigned 48MP cameras, and a fresh layout. However, the most notable change this year is the switch from titanium to aluminium for the casing—a move that has sparked what many are calling the “Scratchgate” issue.
The problem came to light when Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared a clip on X highlighting how prone the deep blue iPhone 17 Pro is to scratches. Soon, other users reported similar issues, revealing the downside of Apple’s major design shift.
The aluminium casing, less durable than titanium, is susceptible to scratches from everyday items like keys, coins, or even handbags. These scratches expose the silver aluminium beneath the color coating—a frustrating flaw for a phone priced above ₹1.3 lakh. Even heavy-duty tests, such as those by JerryRigEverything, have confirmed its fragility.
Currently, the only effective solution is using a case. Apple offers a variety of options, including MagSafe cases, while third-party brands like Spigen provide additional protection. Though cases may slightly obscure the new colors and design, they are essential to avoid becoming part of the Scratchgate saga.
