Peshawar: Several people were injured on Tuesday when a blast on a railway track derailed five coaches of the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express in Pakistan’s southwestern Sindh province, railway police reported. The injured passengers were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

The explosion occurred near Somarwah, close to Sultan Kot in Shikarpur district. A rescue operation is currently underway, while heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces have cordoned off the area and begun collecting evidence to determine the cause of the blast. Early reports indicate significant damage to the railway track.

The Jaffar Express, which runs between Quetta and Peshawar, has been repeatedly targeted in recent months. In March, the train suffered its deadliest attack when 26 people, including security personnel, were killed in a hijacking. Security forces later killed 33 terrorists and rescued 354 hostages.

Earlier incidents include:

September 2025: A blast on the Dasht railway track in Mastung, Balochistan, destroyed one coach and derailed six others, injuring 12 passengers.

August 10, 2025: An improvised explosive device derailed six coaches in Mastung, injuring four people.

August 4, 2025: Gunfire targeted the pilot engine near Kolpur; the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility.

June 2025: An explosion in Jacobabad district derailed four coaches; no casualties were reported.

Authorities suspect ethnic Baloch terrorist groups are behind these attacks, which have repeatedly targeted the Jaffar Express in recent months.
