Jammu: Heavy rains, flash floods and landslides have caused widespread damage in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district, where 283 houses were damaged and 950 people evacuated, officials said on Thursday.
Ramban Deputy Commissioner Alyas Khan said a sudden cloudburst at Drubla village in Rajgarh tehsil on August 29 triggered landslides and flash floods, killing four people, leaving one woman missing, and injuring another.
The district also suffered damage to 84 roads, 98 water supply schemes and 71 power feeders due to the continuous rains, Union minister Jitendra Singh said while sharing the damage assessment.
Of 182 roads, 75 were initially blocked and 55 restored. Fresh rains later damaged 84 roads, of which 30 have since been reopened. Similarly, of 98 water supply schemes, 91 were hit and 60 restored, but further rains disrupted 43 more, with 24 repaired so far.
In the power sector, 49 of 54 feeders were affected, 47 restored, but 21 were again damaged, with 19 restored (nine partially). Out of 1,781 transformers, 1,489 were initially affected and 1,460 restored, though 984 suffered damage again, with 462 back in service.
The administration has set up 15 relief camps, sheltering over 650 people with food, bedding and medical care. Six medical camps have also been established to support the displaced families.
