Jammu Police Fully Prepared for Peaceful Diwali, Upcoming Darbar Move: SSP Joginder Singh

Jammu: The Jammu Police are fully geared up to ensure a peaceful Diwali celebration and the smooth conduct of the upcoming ‘Darbar Move’ next month, a senior officer said on Sunday. He urged citizens to cooperate with security agencies and help foil any attempts by enemy forces to disturb peace in the winter capital.

Jammu Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Joginder Singh appealed to residents to complete tenant verification formalities and report any suspicious or unclaimed objects found in public places or markets.

“As you all know, we have been combating terrorism for the past 30–35 years. Despite being defeated in five wars, our neighbour (Pakistan) continues to attempt to create unrest by pushing terrorists and drugs into our territory. We must remain alert and united to counter such conspiracies,” SSP Singh told reporters.

He said the police have made all necessary security arrangements for Diwali festivities and the reopening of government offices in Jammu under the revived ‘Darbar Move’—a practice reinstated by the J&K government after four years.

On October 16, the Jammu and Kashmir government announced the closure of Darbar Move offices in Srinagar on October 31, shortly after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared the restoration of the 150-year-old tradition introduced by the Dogra rulers in 1872. The decision has been widely welcomed, especially by Jammu’s trading community, who termed it a “Diwali gift.”

The Darbar Move tradition had been discontinued in 2021 by the administration led by Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha.

“With the revival of the Darbar Move, Jammu is expected to witness a higher influx of people from the Valley this winter. Therefore, tenant verification becomes crucial. I urge property owners, especially those renting to migrant workers, to complete the verification forms,” the SSP added.

He noted that police have already stepped up security in crowded marketplaces ahead of Diwali. “Sometimes, people leave behind their belongings unintentionally. We must remain vigilant and immediately report any unclaimed items to the police,” he said.

Emphasizing that peace and normalcy have prevailed in Jammu for several years, SSP Singh cautioned that “the enemy continues to look for opportunities to disturb the calm.”

“There’s no need for fear. The Army, BSF, police, and paramilitary forces are all performing their duties with utmost dedication to prevent any untoward incident. But we also need public cooperation—our success depends on the active support and confidence of the people,” he said.
