JAMMU: Continuous heavy rainfall in Banihal and surrounding areas on Tuesday has once again disrupted traffic on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway. Authorities confirmed that vehicular movement has been suspended for safety reasons.

Reports of minor landslides and falling stones along several stretches have raised concerns for commuters. Traffic Police officials said the highway, partially reopened yesterday after days of closure, could not be opened today due to persistent rain.

“Our priority is the safety of travelers. With the current heavy rainfall, allowing traffic would be too risky,” a senior traffic police officer said. He urged commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and check official updates before starting their journey. “The situation is being closely monitored, and all decisions will be made with public safety in mind,” he added.

The officer noted that traffic on the Mughal Road is moving smoothly, in line with the issued advisory.

The 250-km Jammu–Srinagar National Highway is the only all-weather road connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, and frequent closures due to rain and landslides often disrupt the supply of essential goods.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming hours, keeping officials and restoration teams on high alert.
