Security has been stepped up across Jammu ahead of Independence Day, with intensified checking, patrolling, and area domination, officials said on Thursday.
A multi-tier security grid comprising the Army, BSF, and Jammu and Kashmir Police remains on high alert along the Line of Control and International Border to thwart any threats from across the border. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) of the J&K Police have been deployed in Jammu city, while frisking at entry and exit points in all districts and on major roads has been scaled up.
Security along the Jammu–Srinagar and Jammu–Pathankot highways has been reinforced, and deployments have been increased across all 10 districts, with a special focus on militancy-hit Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Doda, Udhampur, and Kathua.
The main Independence Day function in Jammu will take place at Maulana Azad Stadium, where Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary will unfurl the Tricolour and take the salute. In Srinagar, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will preside over the celebrations at Bakshi Stadium. Special arrangements have been made at both venues.
“In view of tomorrow’s celebrations, strict security measures are in place across Udhampur district—from national highways to remote areas like Basantgarh and Latti,” said Additional SP Udhampur Sandeep Bhat. “CRPF and CISF personnel, along with sniffer dogs and anti-sabotage teams, are on duty, and highway security remains alert.”
Officials added that border grid security has been further tightened, with important roads and highways under CCTV surveillance. Police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) units are conducting round-the-clock patrolling and intensified area checks.
In Rajouri and Poonch, police have issued a security advisory urging residents to cooperate during checking and to report any suspicious movement or object immediately.
