MENDHAR: Minister for Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmed Rana, today emphasized the need for sustained and collective efforts to preserve, protect, and promote the tribal values that form the backbone of communities in the Pir Panjal region.
Addressing a vibrant Tribal Mela organized by the Tribal Affairs Department in collaboration with the local District Administration at Sagra in Mendhar, Poonch, the Minister stressed that tribal development should not come at the expense of cultural heritage. He advocated for an integrative approach that balances progress with tradition, cautioning that unchecked modern influences could erode the deep-rooted tribal customs and community-driven moral frameworks.
Minister Rana reiterated the Omar Abdullah Government’s commitment to fostering a development model that is inclusive, respects tribal traditions, and strengthens a resilient, self-reliant tribal society. He lauded the Tribal Affairs Department and District Administration for organizing the Mela, describing it as a meaningful initiative to engage communities while promoting development with dignity.



The Mela, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from the local populace, celebrated tribal life, customs, and wisdom. It provided a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities, including traditional cuisine reflecting the culinary diversity of the region.
Exhibitions of local medicinal plants highlighted traditional knowledge systems that continue to support rural healthcare practices. A free medical camp was also held, offering health consultations and services to attendees. The event underscored the importance of preserving cultural continuity while reflecting the Government’s commitment to development rooted in the realities of tribal society.
Chairperson of the District Development Council Poonch, Tazeem Akhtar; Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Ashok Kumar Sharma; senior district officers, and a large number of locals were present at the event.
