SRINAGAR: Minister for Jal Shakti, Javed Ahmed Rana, today carried out an extensive inspection of the 1.125 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) Rapid Sand Filtration Water Treatment Plant (WTP) at Mehjoor Nagar, Srinagar.
He was accompanied by MLA Ahsan Pardesi and senior departmental officers. During the visit, the Minister reviewed the plant’s operational efficiency, treatment capacity, and service delivery mechanisms.
Rana underlined the importance of maintaining consistent water quality and ensuring efficient distribution to meet public needs. While appreciating the efforts of engineers and field staff, he highlighted the urgent requirement to upgrade infrastructure in line with the city’s growing population.

The Minister also inspected the Padshahi Bagh Water Supply Scheme (WSS), which caters to nearly 35,000 residents using raw water drawn from the River Jhelum. He directed immediate augmentation of the scheme through the installation of a new 2.00 MGD Water Treatment Plant.
To facilitate the expansion, Rana instructed the Chief Engineer, PHE Department, to expedite acquisition of six kanal of land, stressing close coordination with the district administration and revenue authorities for early completion of the transfer process.
“The Omar Abdullah–led Government is fully committed to ensuring safe and adequate drinking water for every household,” the Minister said. He further noted that such inspections would be conducted regularly to assess ground progress, resolve bottlenecks, and ensure timely completion of projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission and other urban water supply programmes.
The inspection was attended by the Chief Engineer, Superintending Engineer, Executive Engineers, and other technical staff of the department.
