Seeks Centre’s Support for Post-Flood Restoration and Jal Jeevan Mission in J&K

New Delhi: Jammu & Kashmir Jal Shakti Minister, Javed Ahmed Rana, today met Union Jal Shakti Minister, Chandrakant Raghunath Patil, in New Delhi to discuss pressing issues confronting the Union Territory.

Rana highlighted the extensive damage caused by recent flash floods in August and September 2025, which severely affected water supply, irrigation, and flood protection infrastructure. He emphasized the urgent need for sustained financial support to restore essential services and complete ongoing projects under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

The Minister explained that the floods disrupted public life, posed immediate public health and agricultural challenges, and damaged critical water infrastructure across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions. He also informed the Union Minister that the J&K Jal Shakti Department has taken swift emergency measures to restore basic services in affected areas.

Rana requested a special financial package for full-scale restoration and long-term resilience measures, stressing the importance of building climate-resilient infrastructure to withstand future extreme weather events.

In addition to flood-related issues, he highlighted the funding gap under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which aims to provide safe drinking water to every rural household in J&K. While many schemes are near completion, delays in central fund releases have constrained timely execution. Rana urged the Union Minister to ensure the prompt release of additional funds to maintain project momentum.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Rana thanked C.R. Patil for his patient hearing and positive response. He reaffirmed the J&K government’s commitment, under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to the goal of “Har Ghar Jal” and the development of robust, climate-resilient water infrastructure for all citizens.

The Union Minister assured full cooperation from the Government of India and recognized the need for urgent and sustained intervention to support the people of Jammu & Kashmir during this crisis.
