Upcoming Ecotourism Park, Other Projects to be Named After Martyrs
SRINAGAR: Minister for Forest, Ecology & Environment, Jal Shakti and Tribal Affairs, Javed Ahmad Rana, on Friday paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the Forest Department who laid down their lives while protecting Jammu and Kashmir’s green wealth.
Speaking at the National Forest Martyrs’ Day–2025 function at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, Rana lauded the dedication and supreme sacrifices of forest personnel in safeguarding the region’s natural heritage. The event, organised by the J&K Forest Department, honoured frontline officials who lost their lives in the line of duty while protecting forests and wildlife.
“The supreme sacrifices made by our brave forest personnel will always be remembered. Their devotion to preserving nature is a legacy for future generations,” the Minister said, describing forests as the “lungs of the planet” and forest staff as “real heroes.”




He stressed that protecting forests and water is vital for human survival and urged collective responsibility to continue the mission of the fallen heroes. Rana also announced several initiatives, including the development of an ecotourism park and other infrastructure in memory of the martyrs, as well as the introduction of group insurance facilities for employees.
Conservator of Forests, North Circle, Irfan Ali Shah, in his welcome address, highlighted the challenges faced by frontline staff and reiterated the department’s commitment to their welfare. Representatives of various forest associations also spoke on the occasion, acknowledging the sacrifices of forest officials.
The Minister released a publication titled “Green Hearts” and felicitated family members of the martyrs.
Commissioner Secretary, Forest, Ecology & Environment, Sheetal Nanda; PCCF & HoFF, Suresh Kumar Gupta; senior officials, representatives of forest organisations, environmental activists, and families of martyrs attended the event.
Earlier, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Forest Martyrs Memorial, Shankaracharya Hill, Srinagar. In Jammu, tributes were paid at the Foresters Memorial, FRMC (ICT Lab), Narwal, while similar observances were organised across J&K, including at the Kashmir Forest Training School, Chitternar.
