Mumbai: Veteran actress and parliamentarian Jaya Bachchan made a powerful statement at the Filmfare Awards 2025 in Ahmedabad, where she was honoured with the Cine Icon Award.

Using the stage to champion a cause close to her heart, Jaya urged the audience to stop using the term ‘Bollywood’ and instead recognise the industry by its true identity — the Hindi-Indian film industry.

Taking the stage amid loud applause, she said,

“This is not Bollywood or Hollywood. Many of you — actors, artists, writers, directors, and members of the audience — refer to it as Bollywood. Please don’t do this. This is the Hindi-Indian film industry, and it deserves its due respect. This is a humble request from someone who has been part of this industry for the last 55 years.”

Expressing her gratitude for the honour, Jaya added,

“Thank you for all the love and graciousness. I accept this with all humility.”

The award was presented to her by Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar, who shared affectionate words for the veteran. Introducing her, Karan said,

“Let’s give a huge round of applause and welcome the one and only Jaya Bachchan Aunty.”

With a touch of humour and warmth, he added,

“I’m sorry we’re being silly, but we consider you our mother. Shah Rukh and I are more excited than you to present this award. God bless you and thank you so much. I’ve known Aunty Jaya since childhood — I even had the privilege of directing her. Her legacy precedes us all, but beyond that, she has a truly warm heart, and everyone should know that — even the paparazzi.”

Their heartfelt banter drew cheers and laughter from the audience.

Jaya Bachchan and Karan Johar share a long association — she has starred in Dharma Productions’ iconic films such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho.
