JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has withdrawn its earlier order imposing a night curfew in areas within two kilometres of the International Border in Samba district.
No explanation was provided for the withdrawal of the press note, which came just hours after its release. The Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) issued a statement saying, “The Press Note titled ‘Night curfew imposed in Samba border areas for enhanced security’ is hereby withdrawn and should not be published.”
Previously, the DIPR had cited an order from Samba Deputy Commissioner Ayushi Sudan stating that the administration decided to impose the curfew after consultations with various security stakeholders. The curfew was aimed at supporting Border Security Force (BSF) operations and strengthening security in the area.
According to the initial order, the curfew was to be enforced daily from 10 pm to 5 am for two months, unless lifted earlier.
“The decision was taken in coordination with security agencies to enhance border monitoring and prevent unlawful activities by regulating civilian movement during nighttime,” the order had said.
The Sanyal belt of Samba district had witnessed a deadly encounter in May this year, in which four policemen were killed and three others, including a deputy superintendent of police, sustained injuries.
