Srinagar: Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, on Tuesday informed legislators that they cannot raise questions related to departments functioning under the control of the Lieutenant Governor.

Citing an instance, the Speaker said a question submitted by MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed regarding the Home Department had to be deleted, as the department falls under the LG’s jurisdiction in accordance with the J&K Reorganisation Act.

Khursheed, an Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) legislator, had sought an explanation from the government over the “undue delay” in granting ex-gratia relief and benefits under SRO-43 to families of violence victims in Jammu and Kashmir. He had also cited specific cases and asked for a timeline for settling compensation claims in favour of the victims’ next of kin.
