Jammu: Senior Congress leader from Jammu and Kashmir, Dina Nath Bhagat, passed away at a hospital in Punjab’s Ludhiana early Monday following a brief illness. He was 79.

The former Chenani MLA is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters. His son Naresh, an advocate, said Bhagat had been unwell for the past 10 days and died around 3.30 am. Initially treated for a lung infection at Government Medical College, Jammu, he was later shifted to Ludhiana for advanced care. His last rites will be performed at Devika in Udhampur later in the day.

Bhagat entered the J&K Assembly in 2014 as a BJP legislator from Chenani. He quit the party in November 2020, calling it “anti-Dalit,” briefly joined the National Panthers Party, and eventually entered the Congress in January 2022.

J&K Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma condoled his demise, remembering him as a leader active in both politics and social life.
