Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir Congress leadership on Tuesday visited the areas affected by recent cloudbursts in Kathua district and urged the government to rehabilitate those impacted by the disaster in the region’s twin districts.

Since August 14, three cloudbursts in Chishoti village of Kishtwar district, as well as in Jodh Ghati and Janglote areas of Kathua district, have claimed 71 lives and left 122 people injured.

A high-level Congress team, led by working president Raman Bhalla, visited relief camps, met the affected families, and offered condolences to those who lost loved ones in the cloudbursts and flash floods. The delegation emphasized that the Congress stands in solidarity with the victims and will press both the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government for proper relief and rehabilitation.

Bhalla called on the government to ensure comprehensive rehabilitation of the affected population. “We are seeking a special Central package for the relief and rehabilitation of those impacted,” he said, urging the Union government to provide adequate assistance to families who have lost members, homes, and farmland.

He also recommended a structured policy for resettling displaced individuals, including allocation of alternate land, provision of shelters, sufficient financial aid for rebuilding homes, and compensation of Rs 10 lakh for loss of life.

The Congress leaders further raised concerns about the safety of residents in the Maggar Khad area, where cracks have appeared in the protective wall near the railway track, calling on the administration to act immediately to prevent any danger.

Assuring the affected people of their support, the Congress delegation vowed to hold the government accountable for timely and effective rehabilitation efforts.
