Jammu: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday announced the revival of the traditional biannual Darbar Move after a gap of more than four years.
The century-old practice, which involves shifting the capital between Jammu and Srinagar with the change of seasons, was discontinued by the Lieutenant Governor’s administration in 2021.
Addressing a press conference in Jammu, Omar said the state cabinet had approved the proposal to restore the tradition, and the file had also received the Lieutenant Governor’s assent. “The government is reviving the practice soon,” he said, as quoted by news agency KINS.
Introduced in 1872 by Maharaja Gulab Singh to ensure administrative accessibility in both regions, the Darbar Move remained a symbol of unity between Jammu and Kashmir for over a century until its suspension in 2021. The latest decision marks the return of one of the region’s oldest and most significant administrative traditions.
