JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has approved the “Chief Minister’s Scheme for Introduction of Heritage Courses” under the Skill Development Department, a major initiative aimed at preserving the Union Territory’s rich cultural heritage while promoting skill-based employment opportunities.

According to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s office, the scheme will revive seven traditional craft courses across 25 training units in Government ITIs and Polytechnics, with a total intake capacity of 500 students.

The programme seeks to safeguard and modernize Jammu and Kashmir’s traditional art forms, transforming them into viable sources of livelihood for the youth. Trainees will receive monthly stipends, and instructors will be offered honorariums to encourage participation and ensure quality training.

Officials noted that the initiative will bolster J&K’s renowned legacy in crafts such as wood carving, papier-mâché, shawl weaving, and other heritage skills by integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern training infrastructure.
