Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday reviewed the situation triggered by continuous heavy rains that have swollen rivers and streams across the Union Territory, officials said.
As a precaution, schools and colleges across the Kashmir Valley were ordered shut for the day, with the Meteorological Department forecasting more rain over the next 24 hours.
The chief minister chaired a morning meeting to assess the situation and directed officials to intensify ground response, clear waterlogged areas, safeguard essential services, carry out timely evacuations in critical zones, and provide immediate relief.
“Hon’ble Ministers @JavedRanaa and @satishsharmajnk briefed on the situation in Jammu, while Hon’ble Minister @sakinaitoo and Advisor to the CM @nasirsogami provided updates on Kashmir. The Chief Minister appealed to the people to follow advisories, avoid vulnerable spots, and stay safe,” the CM’s office posted on X.
While the Jhelum river and its tributaries are flowing below the danger mark, water levels in parts of south and central Kashmir, including Srinagar, have risen sharply since Tuesday’s rainfall, officials said. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department warned that gauges are rising and could climb further if the rain continues.
“All concerned authorities are requested to remain on alert and take necessary measures. The public is advised not to venture near water bodies and exercise caution. All officers assigned flood duties must report immediately to their posts,” the department posted on X.
Meanwhile, the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been closed for all types of traffic following landslides, shooting stones, and waterlogging at several stretches, officials added.
Examinations scheduled for Wednesday by Kashmir University and other universities in the Valley have also been postponed.
