Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) on Friday secured three of the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the remaining one, after a closely fought election marked by intense political maneuvering.
This was the first Rajya Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, marking a significant moment as members of the Upper House were elected from the Union Territory for the first time.
Voting was held earlier in the day at the Legislative Assembly complex in Srinagar, where MLAs cast their votes across three polling booths.
NC candidates Choudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sajad Kichloo, and Gurwinder Singh Oberoi emerged victorious, while BJP’s Sat Sharma claimed the fourth seat.
The battle for the final seat remained uncertain until the last round of counting, with both parties expressing confidence in their respective tallies.
Support from the Congress, PDP, CPI(M), and several independents helped the NC secure a comfortable majority in three constituencies, while the BJP held firm within its bloc to win one seat.
Leaders from both parties said the results reflected their respective strengths in the Assembly. With the outcome, the NC has consolidated its dominance in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajya Sabha representation, while the BJP maintained a notable presence with one seat.
