JAMMU: The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) is harnessing drone technology for seed dispersal as part of its mission to protect the natural beauty of the sacred Trikuta hills in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir. As part of its annual green plan, the Board has already planted over 17 lakh (1.7 million) saplings, officials said on Friday.
This environmental initiative is supported by multiple organizations, working together to promote eco-friendly and sustainable practices in the region.
“Drone technology is being used to disperse seeds across the terrain to preserve the natural landscape surrounding the shrine. Over 1.7 million saplings have been planted under our annual green initiative,” said SMVDSB Chief Executive Officer Anshul Garg.
He added that the program reflects effective collaboration between institutions and active community involvement in environmental stewardship. One such partnership is with the Central Government Pensioners Welfare Association (CGPWA), Jammu.
“Our collaboration with CGPWA has significantly raised environmental awareness and promoted sustainable practices within the community, making use of their vast network and outreach,” Garg noted.
With the arrival of the monsoon season, SMVDSB and CGPWA have relaunched their “Vaishnavi Vatika” plant sale counter at Vaishnavi Dham in Jammu, offering a wide range of nearly 28 native plant species. These plants are grown in the Board’s high-tech nursery located in Kunia village, Panthal, near Katra.
“These indigenous plants are well-adapted to the local climate and ecosystem. By purchasing them, individuals can directly support ecological preservation and sustainability,” Garg explained.
He also emphasized the Shrine Board’s ongoing commitment to eco-friendly practices under the leadership of the Lieutenant Governor, highlighting initiatives in afforestation, solid waste and water management, and solar energy adoption.
