JMC Commissioner Inspects Restoration Work at Gorkha Nagar Cremation Ground

JAMMU: Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Commissioner Dr. Devansh Yadav today visited the Gorkha Nagar area to assess the situation following the recent heavy rains and floods that caused extensive damage in the locality.

During the visit, Dr. Yadav inspected the Gorkha Nagar cremation ground, which serves the residents of Gorkha Nagar, Bahu Fort, and adjoining areas for performing last rites. The recent flooding of the Tawi River had severely damaged the crematorium’s infrastructure — including boundary walls and pathways — and left behind large deposits of silt, debris, and garbage, obstructing access for local residents.

Acting promptly after the floods, the Jammu Municipal Corporation launched emergency clearance operations. JCB machines were deployed to remove the accumulated debris and to reopen approach roads leading to the cremation ground. The Commissioner directed officials to expedite repair and restoration works to ensure the site is rehabilitated at the earliest.

“The recent floods caused widespread damage across Jammu city, and the Gorkha Nagar cremation ground was one of the affected sites. The Corporation immediately initiated clearance and restoration works to provide relief to residents. A detailed proposal has already been submitted to the government for the release of funds to carry out comprehensive flood restoration across various areas,” Dr. Yadav said.

He added that while awaiting government funds, the JMC has already begun temporary repairs at the cremation ground, keeping in mind the emotional and cultural importance of the site.

The Commissioner further informed that the Corporation will soon undertake the construction of raised platforms and the installation of tin sheds at the crematorium to facilitate cremation rituals in all weather conditions. He emphasized that cremation grounds hold deep emotional significance for people, and the Corporation is committed to maintaining such places with dignity and respect.

Dr. Yadav also instructed concerned officials to prepare a detailed damage assessment report and outline necessary interventions to enable the timely implementation of a comprehensive restoration plan once funds are released. He reiterated JMC’s commitment to ensuring cleanliness, sanitation, and basic amenities at all public facilities, including cremation grounds, graveyards, and other community infrastructure.

Local residents and representatives expressed gratitude to Dr. Yadav for his personal visit and swift action. They lauded the Corporation’s efforts to address their concerns and restore the cremation ground, which holds significant cultural and emotional value for the community.

Among those accompanying the Commissioner were Joint Commissioner (Works) Firdous Ahmed Qazi, Health Officer Dr. Vinod Sharma, and Executive Engineer Bashir Ahmed Kichloo.
