Central Government Approves ₹10 Crore for Infrastructure Development and Cultural Enhancement in Sonpah, Budgam
SRINAGAR,: In a significant boost to Kashmir’s renowned craft sector, the Government of India has approved the establishment of a Craft Tourism Village in Sonpah, Budgam District — a treasure trove of traditional art located along the scenic route to Doodhpathri. The project is sanctioned at a total cost of ₹10 crore.
The Union Ministry of Textiles has released the first installment of the Central share amounting to ₹4.50 crore under the National Handicrafts Development Programme’s Infrastructure and Technology Support Scheme.
The Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, will implement the initiative, with funds being channeled through the Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India.
In an official statement, a department spokesperson expressed gratitude to the Central Government for acknowledging Sonpah’s rich legacy of Sozni craft artisans. “Twenty-two craftsmen from this award-winning village have earned recognition through multiple UT-level and Shilp Guru awards,” he noted.
Located near popular tourist spots Doodhpathri and Tossa Maidan, the Craft Tourism Village in Sonpah will offer visitors and art enthusiasts a unique opportunity to experience the living tradition of local crafts firsthand. “The project includes the creation of aesthetic features such as designer gates, mural paintings, cultural and interactive zones with live craft demonstrations, common workspaces featuring display and sale counters, infrastructure upgrades, community amenities, and improved market access and branding,” the spokesperson added.
Emphasizing the importance of Craft Tourism Villages for Kashmir’s nature-rich destinations, the spokesperson said the initiative will transform Sonpah into a modern tourism hub while preserving its vibrant cultural and craft heritage.
