Jammu: The annual four-day pilgrimage to the 11,500-feet-high Kounsar Nag Lake — revered in both Kashmir Shaivism and Hinduism — concluded successfully, with devotees returning to the base camp in Reasi district, officials said on Tuesday.

The pilgrimage route from Reasi to Gorvan and up to Kousar Gali lies within Reasi district, while the stretch from Kousar Gali to the oligotrophic lake in the Pir Panjal mountain range falls under Kulgam district.

Flagged off on August 7 from Shiv Mandir, Reasi, by MLA Kuldeep Raj Dubey and Deputy Commissioner Nidhi Malik, the yatra began amid an atmosphere of deep religious fervour.

“Despite unpredictable Himalayan weather and challenging terrain, the journey was completed safely and smoothly. The combined efforts of security forces, administrative teams, and dedicated volunteers ensured the yatris experienced both spiritual fulfilment and a secure, comfortable pilgrimage,” a police spokesperson said.

On the first day, pilgrims travelled 99 km by road to Sungri camp for an overnight halt. The next day, they covered 26 km by road to Sarsote camp, followed by an 11 km trek to Sari Camp.

Day three saw the yatris embark early on a 17 km trek to the sacred Kounsar Nag Lake, where they offered prayers before returning to Sari Camp for the night. The final day included the return to Sarsote camp and then the road journey back to Reasi.

Pilgrims expressed gratitude for the flawless arrangements, robust safety measures, and warm hospitality extended throughout the journey. Officials said this year’s yatra was a testament to exemplary teamwork and coordination, with significant contributions from the civil administration, police, army, CRPF, village defence guards, and SDRF.
