Leh: Curfew continued for the sixth consecutive day in the violence-hit town on Monday, as Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta prepared to chair a meeting to review the overall security situation.

“The situation has remained largely peaceful in curfew-bound areas, with no untoward incidents reported. Police and paramilitary forces continue to be deployed in strength across sensitive locations, maintaining strict vigil to ensure law and order,” an official said.

The Lt Governor has convened a high-level meeting at Raj Bhavan to assess the security situation ahead of the last rites of ex-serviceman Tsewang Tharchin from Skurbuchan and Rinchen Dadul (21) from Hanu, scheduled later in the day.

The funerals of two other young men—Stanzin Namgyal (24) and Jigmet Dorjay (25)—were performed on Sunday. All four had died on September 24 during widespread violence in the town.

Officials said mobile internet services remain suspended in Leh, while prohibitory orders banning assemblies of five or more people continue in other major parts of the Union Territory, including Kargil.

The curfew was first imposed on Wednesday evening following violent protests during a shutdown called by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), which demanded talks with the Centre on statehood for Ladakh and extension of the Sixth Schedule. Clashes left over 150 people injured, including around 80 policemen.

More than 60 people, including two councilors, were taken into custody. Among them was climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, detained under the National Security Act on Friday and subsequently lodged in Jodhpur jail, Rajasthan.

On Saturday, curfew was relaxed for four hours in a phased manner, and the period passed without incident.
