Hong Kong Open 2025: Lakshya Sen and Satwik-Chirag Advance to Quarterfinals
Hong Kong: Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen in men’s singles and the men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty progressed to the quarterfinals of the Hong Kong Open 2025 on Thursday after winning their Round of 16 matches.
India’s top-ranked singles player and world No. 20 Lakshya Sen defeated HS Prannoy, ranked 34th in men’s singles, 15-21, 21-18, 21-10 in an hour and eight minutes, according to Olympics.com.
Playing at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Lakshya got off to a slow start, allowing Prannoy to dominate and take the first game. The second game saw Lakshya again lag behind, trailing 11-9 at the break, but he fought back to 13-all. Although Prannoy edged ahead 18-17, Lakshya won four consecutive points to level the match and force a decider.
In the final game, Lakshya started cautiously before finding his rhythm, leading 11-8 at the interval. He conceded only two more points in the second half to seal the win, marking his sixth victory in nine encounters against Prannoy.
In men’s doubles, Satwik and Chirag recovered from a game down to defeat Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul 18-21, 21-15, 21-11 in one hour and three minutes. After trailing 11-7 at the first-game interval and later 16-10, the Indian pair rallied to 18-18, only for the Thai duo to clinch the opener.
The Indians regained control in the second game, keeping their opponents in check and leading 11-10 at the break. They then dominated the latter half to win the game and push the match into a decider. In the final game, Satwik and Chirag asserted their authority early and maintained the momentum to book their spot in the quarterfinals of the BWF Super 500 tournament.
