Rajouri: The Jammu-Rajouri National Highway was blocked on Tuesday following a landslide, bringing traffic to a halt.

Efforts are currently underway to clear the debris and reopen the road for vehicles.

The country is experiencing heavy monsoon rains, with hilly regions being the most severely affected, particularly Uttarakhand. Cloudbursts, floods, and landslides have resulted in significant loss of life and property.

Recently, roads in Nandprayag, Chamoli district, were obstructed by a landslide caused by rainfall, just days after a cloudburst in Uttarkashi left widespread devastation.

Speaking to ANI, Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said work is ongoing to reopen the road blocked by the landslide in Nandprayag. He added that all other roads in the district remain open and traffic is smooth.

Authorities have rebuilt the bridge connecting Uttarkashi to Harsil to facilitate the movement of machinery and relief materials after the cloudburst and flash floods that devastated Dharali and Harsil in Uttarkashi district on August 5.

On that day, a massive mudslide struck Dharali village in the Kheer Gad area near Harsil, causing a sudden surge of debris and water through the settlements. The cloudburst triggered flash floods in these high-altitude villages, sweeping away several houses.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Director General of Police Deepam Seth reviewed the first phase of relief and rescue operations on Sunday. These efforts are being conducted under the guidance of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami following the natural disasters in the Dharali and Harsil areas.

At a high-level meeting at Police Headquarters in Dehradun, DGP Seth and senior officers from police, SDRF, fire service, PAC, telecom, and other units discussed the upcoming action plan for relief efforts in Uttarkashi.

The DGP received updated reports on the progress of rescue operations from various officials including ADG L/O, IG PAC, IG SDRF, IG Telecom, IG Fire, IG Garhwal Range, and DIG L/O. He praised the dedication and hard work of the teams involved in managing the crisis on-site.
