Jammu: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will visit the cloudburst-affected village of Chasoti in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on November 3 to lay the foundation stone for the reconstruction of houses and infrastructure damaged in the devastating incident, officials said on Thursday.

A massive cloudburst had struck Chasoti — the last motorable village on the route to the Machail Mata temple — on August 14, leaving behind a trail of destruction that claimed 65 lives, including three CISF personnel and one Special Police Officer (SPO) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. While 167 people were rescued, 35 remain missing, officials added.

“Fulfilling the government’s commitment towards the affected families, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will lay the foundation stone for the reconstruction of damaged houses and other infrastructure at Chasoti on November 3,” a senior official said.

The calamity had damaged 16 houses and several other structures, including temples, the official noted.

Ahead of the Lt Governor’s visit, Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar Pankaj Kumar Sharma on Thursday visited the area to review the ongoing restoration and developmental works. He inspected the affected sites and took a detailed review of rehabilitation measures and the restoration of essential services.

During his visit, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with residents, listened to their concerns regarding housing, water supply, and electricity, and directed concerned departments to ensure immediate redressal of public grievances.

Sharma informed that the district administration has ensured ration supplies for all affected households till December, with additional stock to be dispatched soon.

Highlighting the district’s winter preparedness, he said all necessary arrangements have been completed, and helpline numbers of the District Administration, Police, and SDM offices have been made available to citizens for any required assistance.
