Srinagar: National Conference (NC) MLA and party general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar on Wednesday urged the Centre to initiate talks with the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir, similar to the dialogue being held with various groups in Ladakh, to address key issues, including the restoration of statehood.

Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sagar recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to restore J&K’s statehood — both in Parliament and during the inauguration of the Sonamarg tunnel earlier this year.

“The Prime Minister has said that he fulfils what he promises. Then why hasn’t he fulfilled this one?” Sagar asked.

Representing the Khanyar constituency, Sagar said that people believe there are “two power centres” in Jammu and Kashmir, which is hampering effective governance.

“The Centre should engage in talks with the leadership of Jammu and Kashmir, as it is doing with the Ladakhi groups. The people of J&K have high expectations from this House, and we must work collectively to resolve their concerns,” he added.
