Lionel Messi says he hopes to feature at the 2026 World Cup in North America, though he admits his age and fitness will determine whether he can help Argentina defend their 2022 title.

The Argentine legend, who will turn 39 next June, recently extended his contract with Major League Soccer side Inter Miami until 2028 — a clear sign that retirement is not yet on his mind.

Speaking to media the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he plans to evaluate his physical condition next year before deciding on his participation in the tournament, which will be held across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“It’s something extraordinary to be part of a World Cup, and I would love to,” Messi said. “I want to be there, to feel good, and to contribute meaningfully to my team. I’ll assess things daily once preseason starts with Inter Miami to see if I can truly be at 100% and be useful — then I’ll decide.”

Messi added that the motivation to defend Argentina’s title remains strong:

“It’s a World Cup — the dream of every player. Winning the last one makes the idea of returning even more special.”

Now in his third decade as a professional, Messi made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2004 at just 17 before later joining Paris Saint-Germain and, in 2023, Inter Miami. His move to the United States reignited interest in American soccer ahead of the next World Cup.

While Messi’s career is filled with club and individual triumphs, international glory came later — first with Argentina’s 2021 Copa América win, followed by the 2022 World Cup victory over France in Qatar.

“Winning the World Cup was the dream of my life,” Messi reflected. “It was the one thing missing in my career after achieving everything with Barcelona and individually. Every player dreams of becoming a world champion.”

To date, Messi has played 195 matches for Argentina, scoring a record 114 goals. A return in 2026 would mark his sixth World Cup appearance, further extending his legacy as one of football’s greatest icons.
