JAMMU: The Legal Metrology Department, under the supervision of Controller Legal Metrology J&K, has imposed penalties on two cement manufacturers for failing to clearly display mandatory information on their product packaging.

Deputy Controller, Consumer Protection Jammu, levied a fine of ₹1.25 lakh on the manufacturers for violating packaging norms as specified under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules. The violations included the omission or unclear display of critical consumer information such as the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), packing date, manufacturer’s name, consumer helpline number, and—most importantly—the net weight of the cement bags.

These disclosures are mandatory to safeguard consumers’ right to be informed and ensure transparency in the sale of packaged goods. The manufacturers acknowledged their violations, and the cases were compounded with the total fine of ₹1.25 lakh. They were also formally warned to ensure strict compliance in the future.

Commenting on the action, Controller Legal Metrology J&K, Rajinder Singh Tara, stated, “The Department will not tolerate any violation of consumer rights. Manufacturers and traders are obligated to provide accurate and clear information to consumers. Any attempt to mislead or conceal critical details will face strict legal action.”

The Legal Metrology Department reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law rigorously and protecting consumers from unfair trade practices. It warned that any future violations would result in stricter penalties and, where necessary, prosecution.
