Chennai, Dec — Eleven people were killed and 54 others sustained injuries in a tragic bus accident in Tamil Nadu on Saturday, officials confirmed. The state-run bus, travelling on a busy route during the afternoon, reportedly lost control and overturned after the driver attempted to negotiate a curve. Preliminary accounts from rescue personnel indicated that several passengers were thrown off their seats due to the impact, while others were trapped inside the damaged vehicle.
Local residents rushed to the spot to assist before police, fire service teams and medical responders arrived and began a coordinated rescue operation. The injured were shifted to government and private hospitals in the region, where multiple victims are undergoing treatment, some in critical condition.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He announced a solatium for the next of kin of the deceased and financial aid for those injured in the incident.
The Chief Minister also directed district officials to ensure that the injured receive immediate and comprehensive medical care and ordered an inquiry to determine the cause of the accident and assess whether any lapses in road safety or vehicle condition contributed to the tragedy.The state transport department has been asked to review safety protocols on ghat and high-risk routes to prevent similar incidents.
