Srinagar: Five alleged drug peddlers were arrested and a large cache of narcotics seized across Kashmir on Friday, police reported.
In a continued crackdown on drugs, police apprehended the suspects from Anantnag, Kupwara, Budgam, and Pulwama districts, recovering substantial quantities of contraband.
A police spokesperson said that in Anantnag, south Kashmir, officers received a tip-off that Ghulam Nabi Bhat, a resident of Sehgund Saller, was storing a significant amount of narcotics at his home. A raid on the premises led to the seizure of 24.7 kg of ganja, and Bhat was taken into custody.
In Kupwara district, north Kashmir, police arrested Tariq Sajad Khan, a resident of Keran, during a routine check and recovered a large quantity of charas-like substance from him.
In central Kashmir’s Budgam area, acting on specific intelligence, police set up a checkpoint at Hakermulla. Two individuals—Mohammad Yaseen Rather of Nasrullapora and Muzaffar Ahmad Malik of Soibugh—tried to flee but were apprehended. A search of their possession revealed 7.63 grams of a heroin-like substance.
Similarly, in Pulwama’s Awantipora area, police acted on a tip-off regarding narcotics stored at a house in Chersoo. A raid led to the seizure of 16 kg of bung powder and 26 grams of charas, with the homeowner, Aqib Rashid Sheikh, arrested.
