New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said the Srinagar blast should serve as a wake-up call for the Centre to strengthen intelligence and anti-terror systems, stressing that the government cannot evade accountability. He also urged the Centre to convene an urgent all-party meeting to address the rising threat of terrorism allegedly supported by external forces.
In a post on X, Kharge expressed condolences over the deaths caused by the accidental explosion at the Nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir. He called for immediate medical care for the injured and adequate compensation for both the victims and the families of those killed.
“It is deeply distressing to learn that nine precious lives have been lost and 24 people injured in the blast at the Nowgam police station. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The injured must receive prompt treatment, and proper compensation should be ensured,” Kharge wrote.
He added that the incident, coming just days after the car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, highlights the urgent need for the Union government to bolster intelligence and anti-terror operations. “It cannot run away from accountability,” he said, asserting that the Congress stands firmly with the nation against terrorism.
Kharge reiterated his demand for an all-party meeting to discuss the escalating terror threat, which he said continues to receive backing from external sources.
Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Nalin Prabhat confirmed that the blast at the Nowgam police station was accidental, ruling out sabotage. He said the explosion occurred on Friday night while a specialised team was handling a large and “unstable” cache of explosives seized from Haryana’s Faridabad in connection with an investigation into a “white-collar terror module.”
