Kupwara: Police on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly assaulting an on-duty doctor at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Kralgund, north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
According to officials, the incident occurred when an attendant, identified as Javid Ahmad Khan of Mushnar, Gundchubutra, allegedly attacked the doctor while he was performing his duties. “The accused was immediately arrested, and an FIR has been registered at Kralgund Police Station,” an official said.
The incident sparked strong condemnation from locals and civil society members, who staged a protest demanding stern punishment for the accused. They also appreciated the swift response of Handwara police in arresting the culprit within a short span of time. Protesters further urged the authorities to ensure adequate safety measures for doctors and healthcare staff.
Meanwhile, the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) denounced the assault, describing it as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a direct attack on the medical fraternity.” DAK President Dr. M Y Tak said such behaviour is intolerable and undermines the very foundation of the healthcare system. Supporting the statement, DAK Kupwara President Dr. Ayjaz Ahmad Bhat termed the incident reprehensible, while Senior Vice President Dr. Gulzar stressed that doctors work tirelessly in challenging conditions, and any act of violence demoralises staff and hampers patient care.
The association has demanded strict legal action, a time-bound investigation, and improved security arrangements at health facilities to safeguard the dignity and safety of medical professionals.
