After an unusually long dry spell, Jammu and Kashmir is likely to witness a change in weather conditions, with rain and snowfall expected over the next few days, according to the Meteorological Department (MeT). Officials said a fresh western disturbance is approaching the region, which is likely to bring light to moderate rain in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches, marking an end to the prolonged dry phase.
The MeT has forecast that cloudy skies will prevail initially, followed by precipitation in several parts of the Union Territory. While higher altitude areas, including mountainous regions, are expected to receive snowfall, lower areas may experience light rain or showers. The weather activity is likely to intensify during night hours, with cold conditions persisting.
The prolonged absence of rainfall and snow had raised concerns over water availability, agriculture, and winter tourism, particularly in Kashmir Valley. Officials said the expected precipitation will help improve soil moisture, replenish water sources, and provide much-needed relief to farmers and orchardists.
MeT officials have also advised travelers, especially those heading towards higher mountain passes and tourist destinations, to remain cautious as snowfall could affect road connectivity. Further updates will be issued as the weather system progresses.
With Chillai Kalan, the harshest phase of winter, around the corner, the forecasted rain and snow are expected to usher in typical winter conditions across Jammu and Kashmir after weeks of dry and cold weather.
