Srinagar: A Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) team is arriving in Kashmir today to review the damage caused by recent floods triggered by heavy rainfall, officials said.
The team will carry out field inspections, evaluate relief and rehabilitation measures, and hold meetings with local authorities.
Earlier this week, overflowing waters of the Jhelum inundated parts of south and central Kashmir, damaging homes, infrastructure, paddy fields, and apple orchards. Though no casualties were reported in the Valley, officials said losses to agriculture and horticulture were extensive.
The MHA team has already toured flood-ravaged areas of Jammu, which has borne the worst impact. Over the past month, Jammu and Kashmir has faced severe weather conditions, with Jammu witnessing flash floods, landslides, and blocked highways. Around 150 people have lost their lives, while key routes, including the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, remain disrupted.
Officials noted that the central team’s visit aims to assess the scale of destruction and explore additional relief measures. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other political leaders have urged the Centre to announce a special relief package for affected areas.
