Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said he was denied permission for the second consecutive Friday to offer prayers at the Jama Masjid here.

“For the second Friday in a row, I have been barred from going to Jama Masjid,” the Mirwaiz wrote on his X handle.

He earlier stated that he was placed under house arrest on Wednesday night following the death of former Hurriyat chief Abdul Gani Bhat.

“Authorities curtail our basic rights at will. The heavens would not have fallen had we been allowed to attend Prof. Bhat Sahib’s janazah and offer prayers for his departed soul. Are the authorities so afraid even of the dead?” he questioned.

Mirwaiz added that no amount of force can silence the faith of the people.

“Being confined to my home week after week and barred from entering the historic Jama Masjid is proof that we are living under an authoritarian system. Denying us the right to honour our leader, share our grief, and pray collectively is highly condemnable. Brute power cannot suppress faith, dignity, or the quest for justice,” he said.
