The Supreme Court on December 3 observed that the nation is proud of Short Service Commission (SSC) women officers of the Indian Air Force, irrespective of their specific roles. The remarks came during the hearing of final arguments in a case challenging the denial of permanent commission to several SSC women officers.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and N Kotiswar Singh made the observations while hearing submissions by senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy. She represented Wing Commander Sucheta Edn and other officers who alleged discrimination in being denied permanent commission despite years of dedicated service.

The Court emphasised that every duty in the Air Force, whether ground duty or flying duty, carries equal responsibility and honour. It noted that the contributions of SSC women officers have strengthened the force and brought pride to the country.

Petitioners argued that they were unfairly excluded from permanent commission due to changes in the 2019 human resource policy and factors such as maternity leave, which affected their eligibility. They contended that such exclusions violated principles of equality and fairness in career progression.

The Centre, in its submissions, assured the Court that there was no discrimination in the grant of permanent commission and that all parameters were being applied uniformly without gender bias. However, the petitioners maintained that systemic barriers continued to disadvantage women officers.

The Supreme Court’s observations highlighted the importance of recognising the service of SSC women officers and ensuring parity in opportunities. The matter remains under consideration, with the Court expected to deliver its judgment after reviewing all arguments.
