Kathmandu: Over 3,700 inmates who fled from various prisons during last week’s violent anti-government protests in Nepal have been recaptured, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Deputy Inspector General Binod Ghimire, spokesperson for Nepal Police, stated that 3,723 escapees have been returned to prison as of Sunday afternoon.
However, with 10,320 prisoners still at large, he urged the public to stay vigilant.
Some inmates surrendered voluntarily, while Indian authorities assisted in apprehending those attempting to flee across the border, DIG Ghimire added.
A joint operation by the Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and Armed Police Force is ongoing to track down the remaining escapees.
The mass jailbreak occurred on September 9, following widespread vandalism, arson, and demonstrations triggered by the Gen-Z protests against corruption and a government ban on several social media platforms—protests that ultimately led to Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s resignation.
