KATHMANDU: Nepal will supply nearly 200 MW of additional electricity to India, raising total exports to 1,140.70 MW from the existing 940 MW, officials said. The move is expected to generate over NRs 80 billion in revenue for the Himalayan nation.

The approval, granted by India’s Central Electricity Authority on Tuesday, allows the import of 199.70 MW from Nepal to Haryana, Nepal Electricity Authority spokesperson Rajan Dhakal told PTI. Currently, Nepal sells surplus electricity to Bihar and Haryana during the monsoon. With this new arrangement, Haryana’s imports will rise from 235.5 MW to 435.5 MW.

Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli welcomed the development on social media, noting that Nepal’s hydropower exports to India will earn the country more than NRs 80.27 billion. The supply will begin once there is a surplus, officials confirmed.

This increase is part of a broader long-term deal signed in January 2024, during the 7th Nepal-India Joint Commission meeting held alongside Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit. The agreement commits Nepal to export 10,000 MW of power to India over the next decade, primarily during the June–November rainy season.
