Chennai: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday hailed the GST reforms as a major win for every citizen of the country.
Acknowledging the diversity of festivals across Indian states, she said the reforms are being implemented ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s original plan to roll them out before the Deepavali festival.
Speaking at the “Tax Reforms for Rising Bharat” event organized by the Chennai Citizens Forum, Sitharaman highlighted that the benefits of the Goods and Services Tax would be felt across all products throughout the day.
She also detailed key measures, noting that 99% of goods previously taxed at 12% under GST will now see their rates slashed to 5%.
The latest GST reforms are scheduled to take effect from September 22.
