Srinagar: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar celebrated National Sports Day on Friday with a pledge ceremony and a range of sporting activities, joining institutions nationwide in honoring hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary.
Organized by the Students Activity and Sports (SAS) Centre, the event saw active participation from students, faculty, and staff. Participants took a fitness pledge reaffirming their commitment to health, fitness, and sportsmanship.
National Sports Day, observed every year on August 29, commemorates Major Dhyan Chand, widely regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Known as the ‘Wizard of Hockey,’ Dhyan Chand’s extraordinary skill and sportsmanship earned India three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. The day promotes the importance of sports and fitness in everyday life.
Registrar Prof. Atikur Rehman said the event underscores the vital role of sports in student life. “Sports instill discipline, confidence, and resilience, while teaching unity and leadership. Celebrating this day is our way of honoring Major Dhyan Chand, whose legacy continues to inspire generations,” he remarked.
Dean of Student Welfare, Prof. Abid Bazaz, emphasized the role of sports in personality development. “In today’s competitive academic environment, balancing studies with physical activity is essential. A healthy body fosters a healthy mind, helping to shape tomorrow’s leaders,” he said.
Dr. Manoj, In-charge Faculty SAS, highlighted the Centre’s commitment to fostering a strong sports culture on campus. “National Sports Day reminds students of their lifelong responsibility towards fitness. Our aim is to integrate sports with academics so students excel in both,” he stated.
SAS Officer Kowsar Ali Mir noted the inclusive nature of the celebration. “Faculty and staff participation alongside students strengthens the culture of sportsmanship. The SAS Centre will continue expanding activities to engage the entire Institute community,” she added.
NCC Officer Lt. Dr. Nitika Kundan reflected on sports as a tool for nation-building. “Sports foster patriotism, unity, and courage. On this day, we honor Major Dhyan Chand as a role model who demonstrated that discipline and hard work elevate both individuals and the nation,” she said.
NSS Coordinator Dr. Pramod Kumar Yadav remarked that the event reflects NIT Srinagar’s commitment to holistic student development. “Academic excellence and physical well-being go hand in hand. Sports are not extracurricular—they are integral to personality development,” he added.
As part of extended celebrations running through August 31, the Institute has planned debates, fitness awareness talks, and competitions in indoor and indigenous games such as Kho Kho, Kabaddi, Pithu, and rope skipping. Additional activities include yoga sessions, cycling events, and interactive conclaves on Olympic and Paralympic values.
This year’s celebrations follow the theme “Ek Ghanta, Khel ke Maidan Main,” encouraging citizens to dedicate at least one hour daily to physical activity to combat lifestyle diseases. The program also promotes Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect, alongside Paralympic values of Courage, Determination, Inspiration, and Equality.
