New Delhi: A no-confidence motion against Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq was submitted in the assembly on Friday, signalling a major shift in the region’s turbulent political landscape.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), claiming support from over 40 lawmakers in the 53-member House, has nominated senior minister Faisal Rathore as its candidate for prime minister.

Haq, who faced mounting pressure to step down, refused to resign and said he is prepared to face the motion.

Former Pakistan prime minister Raja Ashraf and PPP leader Chaudhry Yasin told the media that the Pakistan Muslim League and dissident members of the Forward Bloc have endorsed the no-confidence move. All legislators were present at the assembly secretariat when the motion was submitted.

The Haq government has been the target of widespread protests over its failure to address essential public concerns, including unemployment and corruption. These demonstrations recently escalated into violent clashes with security forces, leaving 19 people dead and more than 100 injured.

Haq, who took office on April 20, 2023, has struggled with persistent unrest throughout his tenure. Opposition leaders argue that replacing him is vital to restoring political stability.

PPP’s Chaudhry Yasin reaffirmed that the party stands with the people of Kashmir and has strengthened its political footing in the region. If the no-confidence motion succeeds, Faisal Rathore is expected to take over as prime minister.
