One Dead Following 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Northwestern Turkey

Sindirgi, Turkey — A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit northwestern Turkey’s Balikesir province on Sunday, resulting in one fatality, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported. The tremor also injured 29 people and caused the collapse of 16 buildings.

According to Turkey’s disaster management authority, AFAD, the quake occurred at approximately 7:53 p.m. and was felt across several provinces, including Istanbul, the country’s largest city.

Yerlikaya confirmed that search and rescue operations have concluded, with no further serious damage or casualties detected.

AFAD stated the earthquake struck at a depth of 11 kilometers (6.8 miles), while the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) measured the magnitude slightly higher at 6.19 and a depth of 10 kilometers.
