Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir has reported over two lakh dog bite cases in the past three years, the government informed the Assembly on Tuesday, adding that a large-scale sterilisation and immunisation drive for stray dogs is currently underway across the Union Territory.
In a written reply to a question raised by National Conference (NC) MLA Mubarak Gul, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah — who also holds the Housing and Urban Development portfolio — said a total of 2,12,968 dog bite cases have been recorded since 2022.
Of these, 98,470 cases were reported from the Jammu division and 1,14,498 cases from the Kashmir division. Jammu district registered the highest number with 54,889 cases, followed by Srinagar with 36,406 and Anantnag with 26,453. Baramulla reported 18,563 cases, while Shopian recorded the lowest number at 1,357 during the same period.
The chief minister said a comprehensive sterilisation and vaccination campaign for stray dogs has been launched across the UT. Between June 2023 and September 2025, a total of 48,998 stray dogs were sterilised and vaccinated.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) led the efforts with 27,237 procedures, followed by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) with 13,730, while municipal committees across other Jammu districts accounted for 7,870.
Abdullah further informed that Srinagar currently operates two Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres and is setting up a third, while the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies, Kashmir, is in the process of establishing similar centres in the remaining nine districts.
In the first phase, land and buildings have already been identified for three clusters at Baramulla, Kulgam, and Sumbal to set up new ABC centres, the government added.
