ISLAMABAD: On Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for unity above all divisions, urging the nation to uphold the ideals of justice, equality, and service to all citizens.

In separate messages, both leaders extended heartfelt congratulations to Pakistanis at home and abroad, noting that courage, unity, and sacrifice were the foundations of the nation’s creation, according to state-run Radio Pakistan.

President Zardari said, “We celebrate this Independence Day with renewed pride and hope, as the nation has reaffirmed its strength and unity in the face of external aggression this May.” Referring to the recent military confrontation with India, he described Pakistan’s performance in the four-day conflict as a “victory” that has boosted public confidence, strengthened faith in institutions, and enhanced Pakistan’s global standing.

The conflict, triggered by India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7 targeting alleged terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, followed the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. After intense cross-border drone and missile exchanges, both countries reached an understanding to end hostilities on May 10.

President Zardari also reaffirmed Pakistan’s diplomatic, moral, and political support for the people of Kashmir.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the importance of safeguarding national interests, including water resources. “We remain steadfast in protecting Pakistan’s sovereignty,” he said, reiterating his commitment to peaceful coexistence and resolving regional and global issues through dialogue and diplomacy. He stressed that India must demonstrate a similar commitment, particularly regarding the resolution of all disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir.

Sharif also called on all political parties and segments of society to unite with the government in defending national interests.

On behalf of the Armed Forces of Pakistan, Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu extended their greetings to the nation.

The day began with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad and a 21-gun salute at provincial capitals. Special prayers were offered in mosques for peace, unity, and the country’s prosperity.

The main flag-raising ceremony took place at the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, where Prime Minister Sharif hoisted the national flag. Cities across the country, including Islamabad, were adorned with national flags and illuminated with decorative lights.
