Islamabad : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that India will not be allowed to seize “even a single drop” of Pakistan’s water amid rising tensions between the two countries.
Following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, India imposed a series of punitive measures against Pakistan, including suspending the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT).
Pakistan has repeatedly warned that any attempt to block its water supply would be considered an act of war.
Addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, Prime Minister Sharif said, “I want to tell the enemy that if you threaten our water, know this — you cannot take even one drop of Pakistan’s water.”
He added that if India proceeded with such actions, “you will be taught a lesson that will leave you holding your ears.”
Earlier, former Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari described the suspension of the IWT as an assault on the Indus Valley Civilization and affirmed Pakistan’s resolve not to back down, even if pushed to war.
Speaking to the Pakistani diaspora in Tampa, Florida, Army Chief Asim Munir warned that Islamabad would destroy any dam built to cut off water flow to Pakistan.
“We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do, we will destroy it,” he said, according to Dawn. “The Indus River is not Indian family property. We have ample resources to counter any Indian designs to block the river.”
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians.
After four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes, India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict.
