New Delhi: Paris Olympics bronze medalist Aman Sehrawat has been suspended for one year by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) from all wrestling-related activities after failing to meet the weight requirement at the Senior World Wrestling Championships, ESPN reported on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old, considered one of India’s top medal hopes, was set to compete in the men’s 57 kg freestyle category but was disqualified for exceeding the weight limit by 1.7 kg. The championship took place in Croatia from September 13 to 21, where Antim Panghal was the only Indian to secure a medal — a bronze in the women’s 53 kg division.
In its official communication, the WFI stated:
“You are hereby suspended from all wrestling-related activities, both at the national and international level, for a period of one (1) year, effective from the date of the show-cause notice.”
The letter further added that the decision is “final and binding”, barring Aman from participating in or associating with any WFI-sanctioned events during the suspension period.
The WFI had earlier issued a show-cause notice on September 23, seeking an explanation from Aman over the incident. His reply, submitted on September 29, was found unsatisfactory by the Disciplinary Committee.
Citing “indiscipline and lack of professionalism,” the federation said it expected the Olympic medalist to uphold the highest standards of conduct.
Additionally, Aman’s chief coach Jagmander Singh and three members of his coaching team — Vinod, Virender, and Narender — were also asked to provide an explanation for failing to monitor the wrestler’s weight management ahead of the championships.
